ORIGIN:
The first known Witches appeared around the period 35 million years known as the “Cultural Explosion”, where Anatomically Modern Humans, who were spread all over the Old World by this point, also began delving into the art world. The earliest forms of magic were connected to art and it’s through this that humans began to open themselves to the world of magic. Approximately half of the world’s population at that time was comprised of prehistoric Witches. The beings that would eventually be known as Witches in the modern era, lived among mortal humans for several million years and were greatly respected by those that were unable to use magic. It’s only been relatively recently that Witches have been persecuted due to their gifts. The reasons behind the persecution vary, but among the most plausible are either envy or the capabilities and longer life spans of witches, due to their use of magic, or because doing the persecuting wanted the power that witches commanded. Whatever the reason, it’s only within the last century or so that witches have been able to come out of hiding, though the most power of them are still required to hide a majority of their power for fear of a repeat of the burning times.
Historical Witches (type)
Joan D’Arc (Seer)
Suspected Witches (probable type)
Tutankhamun (prophet)
Inevitably, just as Witches are a species that split off from mortal humans, there are several branches split off from them as well. These classes of beings are still able to use magic, but to a sometimes much lesser degree than Witches are. The first known split occurred very shortly after the first Witches appeared, within a span of several decades. The first beings known as Vampires were Witches that for one reason or another, died. They were subsequently resurrected by summoning demonic forces to inhabit their bodies, effectively creating a race of half demons. They were quickly ostracized from the rest of society for their need to feed off of human blood to sustain themselves, despite the fact that they were once Witches and that they were created by Witches. Through the centuries, because of their natural lust for power and the fact that it has the capability to gain them more blood than if they were common, Vampires have always been leaders in society.
The subsect of Vampires, that are known as Energy Vampires, were born from a similar magic as the Undead Vampires. They were created as while they were still living and may have been sickly or dying, which is why a magical solution was offered. They are living witches that were infused with the same demonic energy that the dead witches were. They are able to blend in with society much easier because their feeding doesn’t often kill the prey, unless in constant contact with the vampire, as in a spouse or lover.
Known Vampires (type)
Vlad Tempe (blood)
Caligula (blood)
Napoleon Bonapart (energy)
Ramses I, II, III (energy)
Ghengis Kahn (blood)
Kubla Kahn (blood)
Ieyasu (blood)
Marilyn Monroe (energy)
Suspected Vampires (Probable type)
The second split from Witches is a relatively recent split is a result of hybriding and mutation. There are three major figures that are said to be responsible for this split. They are Cu Culann in Ireland and Remus and Romulus in Italy. For the former, it is said that Witches who followed him were led to shapeshift into wolves and eventually crossbreeded with them. For the latter, who were Witches themselves and able to shapeshift into wolf forms, it is their decendants who, having always had a close relationship with Wolves, and inheriting their ancestors magic eventually crossbreeded with them. The first generations of the hybrids were very weak and rarely lived to adulthood. It was discovered that some breeds of wolf were more suitable to cross with than others, which is why the majority of Werewolves, as they came to be called, are grey and arctic wolves, as opposed to less study breeds. Werewolves are spread all over the world at this point, and these two are not by far the only origin tales that the species possesses. It’s hard to know exactly which is true but in the old world, these are the most likely. Since werewolves are very pack oriented and rarely socialize outside of the pack, there are next to no historical werewolves save for the ones involved in the creation stories. In recent years, they have begun operation in the underworld, forming Camorra/Mafia like organizations with the aim of furthering the success of individual packs, not necessarily the species as a whole and definitely not individual wolves.
There are several lesser known species of weres, wherein similar occurances caused shapeshifting humans to crossbreed with different types of animals. Foxes, Rabbits, Cats (of innumerable variety) and Bears are the most well known types, though certainly not as well-known or as populous wide-spread or Werewolves.
Known Werewolves (origin)
Cu Culann (Ireland)
Remus (Italy)
Romulus (Italy)
Because Witches are the original race out of the three, they have become the leaders of the Dark world, something both Vampires and Weres are very unsettled by and don’t appreciate. While Witches possesses the most (arguably) and widest range of powers, they are able to keep the other two species in check and limit their contact their contact with mortal humans in order to keep them in the dark about the existence of the dark world. The Dark Covenant, an organization formed by Witches, is now run by representatives of each race and is dedicated to keeping the peace among them and the mortal world. Each and every witch, vampire or were that is born must be registered with the covenant and must abide by the laws set down by the Covenant at its inception. Unregistered beings are subject to be detained by Covenant officials and held at trial.
